  2. Read_Me file for Apple printers.

  5. The majority of the files contained in the Apple
  6. directory are for the Apple LaserWriter, the Apple
  7. LaserWriter Plus, the Apple LaserWriter II NT and
  8. the Apple LaserWriter II NTX PostScript printers.
  9.  
  10. However, it should be noted that the definitions
  11. actually relate to the PostScript firmware
  12. contained within the printer, so if you have
  13. installed the firmware for a LaserWriter II NTX
  14. into a LaserWriter Plus, then you should use the
  15. LaserWriter II NTX definition.
  16.  
  17. The "Apple.ImgWriteII" printer definition file is
  18. for the Apple ImageWriter II printer. The text
  19. highlights available on this printer are good, and
  20. ISO Latin 1 international characters are obtained
  21. by switching between different language character
  22. sets, which gives virtually the same selection of
  23. characters as on the Epson MX-80 type III. Some
  24. use of backspace over- printing is made, but this
  25. is restricted to pairs of standard characters. It
  26. would seem to be impossible to get the ImageWriter
  27. II to overprint two characters when one or both of
  28. the characters requires control sequences to print
  29. the character. Eg. character 255 ( ) should be
  30. possible by over- printing a y and a french
  31. character 126 (~ in ISO Latin1, ¿ in French on the
  32. ImagerWriter II), but it seems to be impossible to
  33. get them to come out on top of each other due to
  34. the presence of the control sequences for
  35. switching to French and back to American.

  37. The graphics resolution 80 by 72 DPI corresponds
  38. to Faster quality on the Apple Macintosh, and 160
  39. by 144 DPI corresponds to Best. 160 by 72 DPI does
  40. not correspond to any quality available on the
  41. Apple Macintosh. It is however a very useful
  42. resolution, being the highest non-interlaced
  43. resolution available. Colour printing should only
  44. be selected if you have installed a colour ribbon
  45. in you ImageWriter II - the ribbon that comes
  46. supplied with the printer is black only.

  48. Although !Printers allows you to print in colour
  49. at 160 by 144 DPI, it should be realised that this
  50. uses interlaces graphics which results in 8 head
  51. passes over the same line and can cause
  52. contamination of the colour ribbon due to printing
  53. light ribbon colours over dark colours already on
  54. the paper.

  56. To connect the ImageWriter II to the Archimedes,
  57. first ensure that the ImageWriter II does not have
  58. a LocalTalk option card installed. If it has,
  59. remove the option card (remembering to change the
  60. DIP switches as detailed in the ImageWriter II
  61. manual). Check the serial settings in use on the
  62. ImageWriter II DIP switches, and set the
  63. Archimedes serial port to match in the !Printers
  64. Connections dialogue. The standard (and preferred)
  65. ImageWriter II serial settings are 9600 baud, 8
  66. bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no XON/XOFF.
